Both of the properties at Mawella Villas are sat within an old working coconut plantation, less than 100 metres from the beach which is accessed via a private path. Mawella is a quiet stretch of golden sand and still home to a traditional fishing community. It is almost untouched by development and has therefore been rated as one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. The breakwater which protects the colourful wooden fishing boats also provides beautiful, calm waters in which to swim, a rarity in Sri Lanka, whilst the beach is home to several bars and restaurants, allowing your evenings to be spent sipping cocktails whilst watching a fiery sun drop below the horizon.
There are several beaches within only a few miles of the property including Hiriketiya Beach, Kudawella Beach and Tangalle Beach, all of which provide a stunning palm-fringed backdrop where you can relax on a sun lounger or paddle out into the lineup with your surfboard. From Mawella, you can take a short hop along the coast to Hummanaya Blow Hole, the second largest blow hole in the world, to watch the waves crashing up against the cliff. To experience a slice of Sri Lankan life, take a tuk-tuk to the bustling nearby towns of Tangalle or Kudawella to visit the fruit and fish markets. Whilst out and about, why not visit one of the many spectacular temples in the area and marvel at their intricate designs and ancient murals.
